Appraisals ~ Professional Biography
My appraisal career began in 2000 while I was working alongside my father in his jewellery store in downtown Vancouver. During this time, I was also completing my Gemmology Diploma through the Canadian Gemmological Association and earned the F.C.Gm.A. designation. I have an extensive background in jewellery creation, design, and sales, all of which contribute significantly to the depth and accuracy of my appraisal work. I have been appraising jewellery since 2000 and had the privilege of serving as a jewellery expert appraiser on the Canadian Antiques Roadshow on CBC.
Information on Appraisals
Contrary to common belief, appraisal values do not automatically increase over time. In fact, they can also decrease. Retail replacement values fluctuate with the market, and factors such as labour costs, gold prices, and retail markups are all influenced by the American market. When the U.S. dollar rises, the cost to replace an item also increases, which can affect your replacement valuation.
Appraised values are typically higher than the original purchase price because they account for anticipated market fluctuations during the two-year period for which the appraisal is considered valid. For this reason, jewellery appraisals should be updated every two years—or sooner if you notice significant changes in the market. Keeping appraisals current ensures that your jewellery is neither underinsured nor overinsured. An outdated appraisal may result in inadequate compensation for replacement or unnecessarily high insurance premiums, and insurance companies will not refund the difference.
If you are using an independent appraiser, it is important to understand that the valuation provided reflects their professional opinion. Retailers may supply diamond certificates or in-house appraisals. However, if an independent appraiser disagrees with the information provided, they will assess and grade the item based on their own observations—unless the client specifically requests that the retailer’s certificate be referenced. In such cases, the appraisal will not be considered an independent opinion, and this will be clearly noted on the report.
Repairs ~ For many people, heirlooms and meaningful gifts carry memories that can’t be replaced—making repair the natural choice when something wears down or breaks.
Is jewelry repair worth it?
Absolutely. Professional jewelry repair is an investment that protects both the sentimental and financial value of your cherished pieces. Skilled jewelers can restore your jewelry’s beauty, functionality, and longevity, ensuring it can be worn and enjoyed for years to come.
From fixing broken clasps and thinning bands to tightening loose stones, timely repairs not only make your jewelry secure and wearable again but also prevent more serious—and more expensive—damage in the future.
