History of Cameo Jewellery:

Cameo jewelry, featuring raised carvings on stone or shell, has a rich history spanning from ancient civilizations to Victorian and Renaissance revivals, evolving from seals and status symbols to popular jewelry.

Ancient Origins:

  • Sumerian Period: Early examples of cameos, often used as seals, can be traced back to the Sumerian period (c. 3100 BC).
  • Ancient Greece: The Greeks carved cameos from materials like agate, onyx, and sardonyx, depicting mythological figures, portraits of rulers, and scenes from everyday life.
  • Roman Empire: The Romans further developed cameo carving, popularizing the use of materials like shell, especially for personalized portraiture. They used cameos as signet rings and for adornment on objects like vases and cups.

Modern Era:

  • Continued Reemergence: Cameos have continued to reemerge through the ages, with cameos passed down through generations sometimes being repurposed with updated settings.
  • Collectors’ Items: Many cameos have been passed down from one family to the next, with each piece carrying its own unique story.
  • Materials: Cameos are typically relief carvings, often made from agate or various types of shell, with gem engravers carving each stone or shell by hand to create figures or scenes.
  • Value: Hardstone cameos, made from semi-precious or precious stones like agate, carnelian, onyx, and quartz, are among the most valuable.
