Rogers Building
Completed in 1912, the 10-storey Rogers Building at 470 Granville Street in Vancouver is a Type A heritage site designed by architects Gould & Champney for developer Jonathan Rogers. A symbol of the city’s pre-WWI economic boom, it was renowned for its white terra cotta facade and modern amenities, remaining a historic landmark.
Key Historical Details
Construction: The building permit was issued on May 31, 1911, and construction was completed by February 19, 1912.
Design: Features white terra cotta tiles from Chicago, granite pillars from Scotland, and originally included a basement barbershop and café.
Ownership & Sales:
1927: Sold to General F.A. “One-Arm” Sutton for over $1 million, a record transaction at the time.
1938: Reacquired by Mrs. Elisabeth Rogers via foreclosure.
1955: Sold to the Koerner Foundation for $1.25 million.
1976: Sold to Equitable Real Estate Investment Corp.
Heritage Status: Designated as a Type A heritage building by the City of Vancouver in 1986.
Restoration: Received a City of Vancouver Heritage Award of Merit in 2003 for exterior and lobby restoration.
